Annie Leibovitz says, "In order to be a good photographer, one must become a part of what is going on." With her eye and vision, Leibovitz exquisitely captures images that tell stories about all kinds of people, places, things, and ideas. Google "Annie Leibovitz,"copy the link to one of her pictures, and answer the following questions in your analysis of the photograph.
1. What story does the photograph tell?
2. How would you best describe the subject being photographed (in as many descriptive adjectives as possible)?
3. How has the photographer changed the perspective of the image from an everyday vision?
4. What aspects of the work do you like or do you identify with?
5. If you could ask Annie Leibovitz to photograph an image in your life, then what would you choose?

ReplyDeleteThis photograph portrays a man practicing the art of throwing knives in an industrial area with his assistant. The knife thrower has a interesting look on his face, the wind is blowing his hair to the right and he is not looking at the target he is throwing at. He appears nervous and hesitant, yet dark and stern. The use of white and red on a relatively bleak grey background amplifies the subjects in an almost angelic way. I like this photo because the two subjects are one of my favorite bands (The White Stripes). This being the case, I can put sound with this photo which brings it to life even more. If I were to have the opportunity for Annie Leibovitz to photograph an image in my owl life, I would have her take a picture of me hunting. Not in the action of shooting an animal, but maybe just in preparation for a hunt, maybe setting up a blind or preparing my dog.

ReplyDeleteThis photograph tells the story of many women (and men) who struggle with body image. Specifically, putting on pounds of make up (the white face) and turning to plastic surgery to try to stop the aging process and "fix" their facial problems. The way she pulls on her skin must represent the areas she wishes were a little tighter and youthful. I describe the subject as ambivalent and showing no emotion. Her lack of emotion could be because the plastic surgery serves as a mask of her reality and implies that she is fake. The photographer has definitely changed the perspective of everyday vision by displaying every theme of the photograph at their roots rather than just showing a woman smiling with plastic surgery. I love the photo but I cannot identify with the picture because I have never been worried about body image other than trying to bulk up. Also, I have never had a family member struggle with plastic surgery. I would ask Annie Leibovitz to photograph a picture of me with my family or in a football game.

ReplyDelete1. This picture shows Kirsten Dunst on a staircase wearing a breathtaking gown. She is looking to her side, and it looks like because of her dress and her expression, that she is going somewhere with many followers behind her.
2. I would describe Kirsten Dunst as serene compared to the explosion of lava that comes from the train of her dress. Kirsten looks like she is powerful, and the dress highlights that.
3. Annie Leibovitz has changed the perspective from an everyday picture because of the lighting and the costume. I don't think that anyone would really wear that extravagant of a dress as she is as they walked up a random flight of stairs.
4. My favorite thing about the photo is the dress and her expression suggest that there is way more happening in that environment that is not shown in the frame. The power of the lava inspired dress makes me think that she is in the middle of some huge struggle. Whether the struggle is internal or external, I don't know but it intrigues me.
5. If I could have Annie Leibovitz photograph anything in my life I would probably try to get her to capture the craziness inside of my head. Obviously she would not take a picture of my brain, but I'm sure she could find a way to express the chaos in a way that they camera could capture it.

ReplyDelete1. Its a vogue photo of Kirsten Dunst from the movie Marie Antoinette. It can be an story, whatever the person takes from it. In the photo she is in a elegant dress from that time period standing in what looks like a dirty hole or cave in the ground. she is looking up towards the light and looks like she is looking for a way out, which could be both literally or metaphorically because her life as queen was confusing for her.
2. She looks beautiful, young and serene. very calm as she gazes up at something. the way the light hits her face is so perfect and hits the edges of her cheek bones so beautifully.
3. How has the photographer changed the perspective of the image from an everyday vision?Anyone can take a photo of a woman standing in a cave looking up but the contrast between the dark, dirty and mysterious cave and Kirstens light blue dress. the two concepts are so completely different that anyone can make their own story behind what they think is going on in the photograph.
4. There is aspects of light in shadow in this image. There is also some sore of mystery and the contrast of colors make kirsten stand out with her pale skin and light colored dress against the dark background.
5. If i could ask Annie Leibovitz to photography an image in my life, i would choose a portrat of my friends and I just being ourselves having fun. I know she could capture such a great moment of us having a blast just being ourselves that could be held as a memory forever.

ReplyDeleteThe picture shows a woman standing under spotlights on a stage. She is wearing a silver dress and seems uninterested in the things around her. The scene can be described as uninterested yet intriguing. It makes the person who is looking at the picture questioning why the women seems almost self-absorbed and above it all. The picture is taken from a lower angle. Also, the spotlights are on even though the only person in the room is the one woman. I like the background light behind the woman. I also like how happy the woman seems even though she is alone. I would want for her to photograph me hanging out with my friends.

ReplyDeleteI chose a photograph of two men standing next to each other in their bathing suits. The picture tells a story of time, and as age as a result of time. The younger man contrasts the older man. His body is clearly younger, stronger, and more youthful. Normally if you were to see two men standing next to each other like this you wouldn't think twice about it. Leibovitz has managed to turn that around and make you take that second look and wonder as to what the relationship between the two men is. I suspect they may be father and son.I can relate to this picture because I feel like that will be me one day, standing next to my father twenty or so years down the line. If I could get Leibovitz to take a picture of me I'd actually want several in a series. I'd want one of me standing next to my dad now, then again in a few decades so I could compare them before and after.

ReplyDeleteThe photo is of a beautiful women wearing a dress that makes her breath taking. The dresses fitted top sparkles from the spotlight trained on her and the train of the ivory dress makes the women look as if she is floating on clouds. The scene is from with in a grad theater, It makes you wonder if the woman has just preformed on stag or is early over looking the area in which she will make her debut. I really like the fact that we cant really see the woman's face. We don't truly know what she is thinking, weather she is bored or terrified. I also like the elegance in the different variables in the picture like the dress or the rococo pillars behind her or even graceful way her neck is arced. If I had the oppurtunity to ask Annie Leibovitz anything I would ask her, if you could choose one subject in the world to take pictures of for the next year what would it be? I wonder if she would choose high fashion icons or would she opt to take pictures of people she loved like her kids or would she want to take pictures of something she has never gotten the chance to capture on film.

ReplyDeleteThirteenth picture down. The one of the Cabins.
1. This photograph is one taken in Nevada. It shows a few cabins in the desert. Rueben, the photographer, said it perfectly himself, "This was one of those times when the camera couldn't capture how amazing the scene actually was". It doesn't have any profound, life changing story, but a simple one. People lived there. People actually lived in those tiny huts, and I think that's a miracle in itself, and also the story, one that can teach us to humble ourselves.
2. The huts are belittled by the mountains, camouflaged, and sturdy. They seem sort of inviting, but only inviting to those who trust the huts themselves. Most of all though, they're mysterious.
3. Had I seen these huts without the huge cliffs in the background, I might've just thought they were pueblos, or whatever they call those mud brick houses. Because he's taken the picture with the cliffs in the background, it changes the setting completely. It shows everyone that these huts are in the middle of nowhere.
4. I mainly like the fact that it was taken in the middle of nowhere. Personally, if I had stumbled upon these on one of my hikes, I would be ecstatic. It would be awesome. Assuming that these are abandoned, it would be nice to think that I was the only one to set foot in these in about 50 years, or however long they've been abandoned for. I can't really relate to it, but I wish I could.
5. If she could do it, I'd have Mrs. Leibovitz to take a macro shot of me sharpening a knife, because this is what I do when I'm bored sometimes. I'd have her mainly focus on the knife, because I want to see the tiny shavings of metal come off. Also, I'd want to see the grit marks from the whet stone on the knife bevel. That'd be pretty rad.

ReplyDeleteThis photo portrays a man standing up straight in a seemingly uncomfortable position. He appears to be flexing and you can see veins popping out in various locations around his chest. I would say that the man is very timid, cold, and comfortable based off his facial expression and the wear and tear to his face. The photographer changed the expression of the photo by making it very simple, there is a solid grey background and the man is only wearing denim jeans. The man featured in the picture looks similar to the man that I portrayed in my last short story. I would ask her to photograph me doing something sweet such as skydiving.

ReplyDelete1) The picture tells the story of Cinderella fleeing from the castle at midnight to make sure her evil step mother does not catch her at the ball. You can see a spotlight on her glass slipper left on the steps above.
2) I really love this photo because her dress is a little bit ghosted so that it exaggerates the fact that she's moving and not posing. Scarlett Johansen already looks like Cinderella, but the way Annie photographed this really portrays what all of us think Cinderella would be like. She looks like an innocent girl running back from the castle, but yet like she doesn't want to leave because her head is turned to the side rather than focusing straight ahead. The way she positioned the glass slipper in the middle of the steps with the beaming light coming down onto it, really makes the picture. At first looking at Cinderella you see her one slipper, but you do not see her other foot. However, as you gaze up to look at the picture you notice that the slipper is lying there. If you didn't know the story of Cinderella already, it would really make you question exactly what was going on.
3) She's changed it from an everyday image from the lighting of the image, Cinderella being more human and model like than the everyday disney princesses, and the facial expression on Scarlet Johansen's face makes you wonder about what exactly happened.
4) I identify with the human part of it. Scarlett Johansen looks so human as she's running down the steps because she knows that she's missing out on something, but there's nothing that she can do because she has to get back to her home before the clock strikes twelve. Instead of going with what most people would now do and say YOLO, she is trying to do something that she's always wanted to do, but still remain trusted. All of us face times like this, and I think thats what makes the story of Cinderella itself so relatable. We all sometimes want to live in fairytales where everything works out the way you want it to.
5) I honestly have no idea what image I would want her to capture because I feel like there are so many. I know that sounds so cliche, but really there are so many moments in my life, even little ones, that mean so much to me and have such an impact on me. There is no way I would know how to just capture one image to tell the story of my life.

ReplyDeleteThe picture taken by Annie Leibovitz depicts a story. In her photo of an older gentlemen who has been worn down by age. The man with long hair makes me wonder what he does for a living and how has his work had such a toll on his body.
I like this photo because the viewer is shown some of the man's story but not all of it. The subject of the photo has been worn down buy his age and work. The wrinkles on his face show how his work has effected him. Maybe the man was a explorer or maybe he made a honest living working on a farm.
Annie was able to change the photo from an everyday image by her usage of light. We are able to see the man's face and grey hair very well. The light she uses shows us what the man truly looks like.
My favorite part of the favorite is the man's face. We are able to see his wrinkles and see how much of a toll his life has had. His grey facial hair and long hair show us that he has put in many years of work.
If I could have Annie photograph me at any point of my life I would have her take a photo of when I leave for college. At that point of my life it will be a very big step for me and it would be interesting to see what emotions she could depict in the photo
http://arthistory.about.com/od/from_exhibitions/ig/Hide-Seek/Annie-Leibovitz-Ellen-DeGeneres-1997.htm
ReplyDeleteThe picture that I chose is a portrait or Ellen DeGeneres. First of all I think Ellen is a very funny/entertaining lesbian. This photo, I believe, tells the story of Ellen's life when she is struggling about her sexual orientation. Her painted face shows how she could have been hiding out and staying away from the real truth. The cigarette in the mouth represents the man within her and her facial expression does that as well. The main parts of the piece that show she is a women is her hair and the fact that she is grabbing her breasts. Usually I never think about the initial struggle of coming out. Now I know Ellen as a confident and open lesbian, but there was a time when she was not that comfortable with herself. I believe this photo resembles that time in her life. The aspects of this photo that I like is the humor in the piece. Most of my paintings are humorous. I feel that pieces of art are very boring unless you can laugh a little at them. If I had Annie photograph my life it would be about my relationship with my brother and his death.
Good stuff. Plus Lexi, Lindsey, and Senan. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis photo shows three United States marines rolling a carpet towards the helicopter Marine One. They are obviously struggling with the task, and they seem apprehensive to approach the behemoth of a machine. The three subjects in the photo are all clutching their hats, as if they are afraid they may blow off. The all wear the same uniform and white gloves and are hunched over the roll of carpet. Two have their heads buried in the work, while the other man’s face is visible. Annie Leibovitz changes this image from a simple everyday landing of Marine One to something special. The black and white imagery complemented by the blurred motion of the rotors of the helicopter make for a distinctive moment in time, frozen by her camera. I particularly like the way the three men feel. They are struggling to close the distance between them and the helicopter, and yet still try. If one moment could be photographed from my life, it would be the moment when I first rode a rollercoaster.
